Hope for Haiti

Doctors and nurses from Midland, Michigan traveled to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake to help with the injured and aftermath.

Ketelie AbuchŽ waits to be seen inside the wound care room at the Les Bours School of Hope Friday afternoon. At home during the quake, her hip was injured when a wall collapsed on her in an attempt to escape. Rob Kelch, an ER nurse at MidMichigan Medical Center, said she would need an x-ray to be properly diagnosed but her hip could be broken. She said it was hard to sit and has been using a wooden stick to move around.

Neighbors and family members work to clear a space into part of their collapsed home to retrieve the bodies of three family members that were caught inside when the home collapsed during the earthquake.

Jean ViergemŽne, left, holds her mother, Fillette Fils-aimŽ, as Rob Kelch and Tammie Cormier, both RN ER nurses at MidMichigan Medical, clean and treat a third degree burn on her left leg and a second degree burn on her left arm. Fils-aimŽ was cooking when the earthquake hit, sending her falling into an open flame, causing the wounds that were not treated for nearly three weeks. Kelch and Cormier set up a wound treatment clinic in one of the classrooms at the Les Bours School for Hope in rural Cite Soleil, a school founded by the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty.

Nelson Nadege, 22, left, and her sister Louis Roseloure, 18, rest in the back of the pediatric tent late one afternoon while Dr. Dree Stryker and Dr. Ader Benoit, OBGYN PC and resident OBGYN at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, run an ultrasound on Nadege who is six months pregnant. Nadege is in a brace after her back was broken during the earthquake. When Dr. Stryker asked for the baby's name while making conversation during the visit, Nadege told them to name it. Dr. Stryker immediately named it Ader after Dr. Benoit, who is also Haitian.

Dr. Dree Stryker, OBGYN PC at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw and a resident of Midland, waves to a patient one night around 2 a.m. during the night shift. Mainly in charge of the orthopedic tent, Dr. Stryker found herself helping with odd jobs throughout the field hospital, helping with everything from changing IVs to running an ultrasound. She had been to Haiti several times before and is working to set up a non-profit organization.

Thurlow received a call from a friend in Miami who saw a breaking news story about the probability of other earthquakes. It was a false alarm for the size and time of an earthquake, but there is a 90 percent probability that another earthquake 5.0 magnitude will happen in the next thirty days, according to the US Geological Survey.

Naika Joseph, 7, peers into the truck as Mallery Thurlow jokes with her about her beauty saying, 'Bl,' which means 'beautiful' in Creole. Thurlow became legal guardian of Naika after her mother, Carole Joseph, right, became sick and considers them her Haitian family. Following the earthquake, Naika had an infected wound after razor wire cut through her ankle to the bone. Thurlow said their trip for medical help saved her leg. The visit was to deliver food to a piece of land where they were sleeping because their home, on the same road, was destroyed.

Ali Tarter holds two-month-old Jerry, as Mallery Thurlow drafts up some quick paperwork after receiving Jerry from his mother. He was the second baby the foundation received following a food distribution they held at the Les Bours School of Hope. According to Thurlow, Jerry looked just like his father, who was killed in the earthquake, and the loss was too much for the mother and couldn't take care of him. While Haitian women try to maintain their composure, Thurlow said she has never had a mom who did not want their child, rather, they know that their child will be better off at an orphanage. With the new orphanage the foundation is starting, Thurlow hopes to care for the children and enroll their parents into busines

Earlier that afternoon their mothers brought them to the foundation's food distribution and gave them to Mallery Thurlow. They are the most recent additions to the foundation's five child orphanage, four children orphaned as a result of the earthquake.

Ali Tarter holds Jivenson, a 3 month-old baby who was orphaned earlier in the day, as she helps Kelencia, 2, balance as she walks around the kitchen at a home in Port-au-Prince where Tarter and other foundation members were staying while in Haiti. Kelencia is also an orphan who arrived to the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty back in October before the earthquake. After a trip to the doctor, it was determined that she had a hole in her heart and would need an operation before September 2010 to save her life. Following the earthquake, visa applications to bring Kelencia to the United States for an operation, were put on hold.

Dr. Brian Mauch, pediatrician at MidMichigan Physicians Group, sits on a balcony at the St. Joseph's Orphanage one night whistling to a three month old baby they nicknamed Jimmy. After his mother brought him into the clinic earlier that afternoon, Mauch and Gail McGee, a pediatric nurse, decided they wanted to take the baby to be evaluated for several days because it was severely malnurished. Upon returning to the clinic several days later with suggestions and thoughts for future care, the mother met them and told them she no longer could or wanted to care for the baby. Dr. Dree Stryker leans out of the bed of a pickup truck to hug Gertrude Bien-AimŽ goodbye as the team of doctors and nurses heads to the Port-au-Prince airport to help at a field hospital. For the first several days in Haiti, Gertrude opened her home to the doctors and nurses, sharing her food and providing shelter after their long days at the clinic in Cite Soleil. Gertrude runs the St. Joseph's Orphanage in Haiti, a foundation responsible for around 30 children. Her guest house in a different area of Port-au-Prince, where she provided shelter in the past to missionaries working in Haiti, was leveled by the earthquake while she was in the basement. She managed to get through a door and crawl out from the rubble and no
