Nearly 250.000 people have been caught up in the recent upsurge of fighting in eastern DR Congo, and at least 100 civilians have been killed and more than 300 wounded since combat resumed in late September 2008 between the forces of the rebel commander Laurent Nkunda and Congolese army soldiers. An estimated 5.4 million people have died since 1998, and around one million people have been living in camps for displaced people within the DR Congo. Many congolese are displaced for the second, third or even fourth time by this conflict. "The conflict along the Rwanda and Congolese border has gone on too long and with catastrophic consequences," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said.
