The spectacular development of greenhouse crops in Andalucia relies on exploiting a mainly African immigrant community and denying them a simple claim to social rights. Due to the favorable meteorological conditions, low cost unheated greenhouses can be used to cultivate crops year round. Working inside the 50 degree celcius plastic shelters are thousands of illegal immigrants. Although the low wages, job insecurity and lethal working conditions are all part of what has made the region in Spain so rich so fast, and even though only an oversupply of desperately poor workers could sustain such conditions, these workers are resented as outsiders.
